Locomotive
Steam Engines
|
Nothing stirs the
imagination quite like the vision of a steam locomotive.
From its early beginning, with the first steam locomotive built by the
British engineer, Richard Trevithick in 1804, locomotive power soon changed
the world of the transport system.
The first man to build a complete public railway was George Stephenson,
who built a 22 mile stretch in Britain, from Stockton to Darlington. This
was authorized by an Act of Parliament in 1821, to carry passengers, as
well as freight.
However, it was Robert Stephenson's (George Stephenson's son) who became
world famous as an inventive railway engineer.
Probably the best known locomotive was the Stephenson's Rocket.
Although, this early development was the seed that culminated in such
creations as the Golden Arrow, Orient Express and the worlds largest locomotive
the Union Pacific's "Big Boy". It was such as the small working tank engines
that fed the industrial development, due to its size.
