The way in which steam engines work, is quite basic. But the result of being able to change energy, from one form to that of another was a revolution.
This development was mainly due to the engineering ability of James Watt. With his design that permits the steam to drive Newcomen's piston both on the forward and return stroke, which increased efficiency. The to and fro motion was converted into rotary movement by a crank. Once rotary movement was achieved the use of steam developed into transport.
